The National Eligibility Test (NET), organised by the University Grants Commission (UGC), is an exam which is conducted across 91 cities in India, across 84 subjects. This is taken up by the students who either want to pursue their career in lectureship, or who opt for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF). The JRF exam can be taken by candidates with a maximum age limit of 30 (age relaxation as per government norms is valid). However, lectureship does not have any age restrictions.

There has been a recent surge in the demand for lecturers in regional languages. Lecturers who can teach Hindi are one of the most sought-after when it comes to regional languages.

The exam is conducted in two papers. Paper 1 is common across all the streams. It consists of 50 questions, which are to be solved within 1 hour. Each question carries two marks, and 100 marks in total are allotted for this paper. It includes questions from teaching, research, general aptitude, and so on.

Paper 2 consists of questions only from the Hindi exam syllabus. It consists of 100 multiple choice questions (MCQs), each of two marks. All these questions are compulsory. The time limit for Paper 2 is two hours. The duration of the paper is generally from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

There is no negative marking these papers. A maximum number of three attempts are permitted for the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) position. There is no maximum number of attempts for lectureship. One can apply for the exam online. There are special provisions for disabled candidates as well, which include 30 minutes of compensatory time, Braille question papers, and other necessary requirements.
