This National Eligibility Test (NET) exam is organised by the University Grants Commission (UGC). One might opt for lectureship or Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), after taking this exam. Everybody, irrespective of their subject choice, can take up this exam in their respective fields. So, students from Political Science, arts, science, humanities, or any other stream, are welcome to start a career in academics.
The eligibility criteria for the exam is 55% aggregate in Master’s Degree or Equivalent Degree for the General Category candidates. The same is kept at 50% for ST/SC/OBC/ PWD Candidates.
The Mass Communication stream in UGC NET comprises of two question papers, paper 2 and paper 3. Paper 2 has 50 questions of 2 marks each, adding up to 100 marks, to be finished within 60 minutes.
Paper 3 has two different parts - part A and part B. Part A includes essay type questions of 300 words each. The student is required to answer anyone elective question with an answer of upto 800 words, from the questions asked from every chapter. This carries 40 marks. Paper 1 is common for all, and includes teaching and research aptitude, general policy, governance and public administration, etc.
The age limit is 30 years for the students who are applying for JRF. No age limit is valid for those applying for the positions of Assistant Professors.
